The Fancy Dance itself requires high stepping, twirling movements. Shawl dancers represent the butterfly, which is why the dancer is supposed to move her arms with her shawl draped over them in movements representative of the fluttering of a butterfly. Traditions in the west say that the women's shawl dancers are similar to the men's grass dancers in that they represent a warrior's dance. The reason that the women were given the right to dance a war dance is because long ago the women used to be runners who ran from the village to village warning of danger, which in return earned them the title of "warrior". Women's shawl dancers regalia consist of outfits made of colourful fabric and ribbons, often adorned with bead or sequin work.

The Jingle Dress Dance is a dance of pride and dignity. It is a dance of the women and is said to have originated as a ceremonial dance of healing. The women dance with their backs straight and lift their legs high when dancing the jingle dress dance, they will also dance the side step. Movements are very stiff and rigid in this dance. A jingle dress dancer places one hand - in which she carries a purse beaded with woodland flowers and leaves - on her hip, and holds a white wing-feather in the other.

The Jingle Dance comes from the Ojibwa Nation. It was popular from 1920 to 1950 and is currently experiencing a strong revival across the nation. The Jingle Dress is made from a fabric such as cotton or taffeta and has numerous "jingles" attached to it. The distinctive sound they make represents waves of water or thunder and is good luck because it scares away evil spirits. Moccasins, leggings, beaded or concho belts, neck scarf, bag and an eagle tail or wing fan completes the regalia. Jingle Dancers are judged on their grace and traditional footwork.

The Grass Dance is a very popular style of dance today. The name "Grass Dance" comes from the custom of some tribes wearing braided grass in their belts. Originally done as a warrior society dance, it has evolved over the years. It has further evolved into the most highly competitive form of Northern dancing to be found today.

The Grass Dancers wear yokes, breech cloths and anklets covered with strands of brightly colored yarn. On their heads they wear either a bandana of a porcupine roach. The Grass Dance is noted for its fluid movements and sliding steps.

The Round Dance creates a simple and fun activity that brings both cultures together for positive interaction. In celebrating this circle of life, it is no co-incidence that the structure of all Pow Wows is a circle, a dance that gives men and women a chance to fall in love, as opposed to the thunder of a pow wow drum, round dance music is soft, slow and gentle vocals are very tender on the album.

The Round Dance is a social dance that all dancers and spectators may participate in. It is done in a clockwise circle stepping to the left in time to the drum beat. Sometimes this is done as a Friendship Dance with two concentric circles moving in opposite directions with people shaking hands as they pass each other.

Round Dance - Most tribes have a version of a "round dance", sometimes called a "soldier dance" or "friendship dance". This dance circles the drum in a side-step movement. Faster-moving lines are nearer the drum. Ladies in some areas may also use a front/back side-step. Everyone is welcome to enter the arena and join in the dance.
